History of Glenside
Glenside, as it stands today, is a product of 300 years of rich history. This vibrant area reflects the interactions of many generations, showcasing the remarkable achievements of local, national, and regional heroes. The Glenside history is evident in both the character of the locality and the architecture that fills the area. Thanks to the preservation efforts by the Glenside authorities, significant artifacts and relics can be discovered in the Glenside museum, highlighting its unique heritage.
The formation of Glenside began in 1683 as part of Cheltenham Township, which became incorporated into Montgomery County just a year later. Following the dissolution of Philadelphia County on September 10, 1695, Glenside found its identity as part of Montgomery County, with Cheltenham becoming the smallest township in the region. Much of Glenside's development can be traced back to William Penn's land grants to a group of 15 fellow Englishmen, who received parcels ranging from 100 to 500 acres, laying the groundwork for what we now recognize as Glenside and Cheltenham Township.
Among the pioneers shaping Downtown Glenside Foundation were Richard Wall and Toby Leech, who played vital roles in the area’s early development. Their involvement in the political, social, and religious growth of Glenside was profound. Toby Leech, a successful businessman, established the area’s first fulling and corn mill at Tookany Creek. The structure he built to house his enslaved workforce still stands today along Church Road. Additionally, Leech was engaged in various land transactions throughout Philadelphia and Chester Counties.
Richard Wall’s residence, constructed in 1682, is now recognized as an important historical site within Glenside. It served as the residence of the Pennsylvania Commonwealth until 1978. Wall’s name endured through history, particularly following his granddaughter's marriage to another key figure, George Shoemaker.
In 1691, Humphrey Morrey became Philadelphia's first mayor for a two-year term, significantly influencing the area’s politics and social progress. His legacy continued through his only surviving child, Richard Morrey, who became known as the first slave owner in Glenside history to free his enslaved workers.
The arrival of the railroad in Glenside in 1855 marked a pivotal moment, leading to the establishment of the area’s first station in 1872. Several districts in Glenside have been recognized on the National Register of Historical Places. Notably, La Mott, an enclave used for training African-American troops post-Civil War, was added on October 31, 1985. Wycote, another significant district with 178 units, was registered on October 16, 1986, making it one of the largest in the registry. Today, Glenside has a population of 10,578, continuing to thrive and evolve as part of Montgomery County history.
